epa03878234 Kenyan Armed Forces soldiers patrol outside the Westgate mall in Nairobi, Kenya, 22 September 2013. The number of people killed in an attack by al-Qaeda-linked militants on a shopping mall in Nairobi has risen to 59, the Kenyan Interior Ministry said. More than 1,000 people have been rescued from the upmarket Westgate shopping mall, said Interior Minister Ole Lenku. Security forces are now in control of the mall's CCTV room, he added. The Kenyan government has been communicating with al-Qaeda-linked militants holding out at a mall in Nairobi where they killed 59 people, says former prime minister Raila Odinga. "There is communication between them (attackers) and the political leaders of the country," Odinga told journalists at a hospital in the capital. "It is a difficult operation. Every effort will be made to rescue the hostages," he added.
